I’ve always found the “enemies-to-lovers” trope exhausting lol Interesting to hear that it works here! I’m all for stories (especially in film) that subvert tropes. I’m not sure exactly why, but romance in books doesn’t appeal to me, but it’s different with film. And I don’t know that it’s just a visual thing. I’ll have to think on this more. It’s been a while since I read something that involves romance, and I don’t think I’ve ever read a single fantasy romance novel.
Maybe it’s time you write your own fairy porn fiction book! Lol
Enemies-to-lovers often feel super contrived, i think it's hard for authors to pull it off, when they have to advertise the themes to readers, and set the right expectations (she says as if she read romance all the time).
It's so interesting that you don't live romance the same on paper and on screen! I wonder why that is, let me know if you find out 👀
I never got into ToG, sadly. I had picked up the first one, but it was the French translation and honestly it wasn't good at all, so now this had kinda soured the series for me? I tried re-reading it in English but it just doesn't hit ://
That's exactly how i feel about romance usually! Not really hate, but little to strong feeling of dislike, except, as you said, for some ships here and there. Like i read a thousand Dramione fanfics at some point, although even there i still skipped the sex scenes too.
If you love fantasy, maybe you could give ACOTAR a try, when you feel a bit sappy. No main gays in there though, so it might not meet your criteria :/
Now that i think of it, Priory of the Orange Tree would totally fit the sapphic (main couple) + fantasy thing! I didn't care as much for their love story, but it was quite prevalent too.

I love your take on ACOTAR! I also got hooked, but have to say I liked ToG more :)
